National Brand Y distributes a fertlizer blend nationwide hoping everyone in the nation will use the same product. Some merchandise this is fine while other merchandise this is not advised. For example, in the south where temperatures are hotter a car will use a thicker grade of motor oil such as 10W-40, while in the north we use a 10W-30 or 5W-30.
In similar fashion as a car's need for the correct blend of motor oil changes with geography so does a plants need for a correct blend of fertilizer. The extreme variation in soils even within our State varies quite a bit. A more local approach to fertilizing is advised to meet the local needs of the plants requirements.
Too many nutrients applied can cause too much stress to the plants doing more harm than good. Too much fertilizers can also supersaturate the soils ability to hold the nutrients, and the nutrient then becomes a pollutant to the environment. Too little nutrients applied can cause the plants to suffer deficiencies.
Trusting in National Brand Y you wont know, unless tested, if you are applying too much or too little of a nutrient, and more is not necessarily better. National Brand Y may be the perfect blend in Wackamuchi, South Pole but, may not be good for Fargo- Moorhead's Red River Valley.
