Techniques to discourage perimeter pests.

Used with initial and follow-up chemical treatments, and monitoring as part of a total Pest Management System for perimeter pests.

Trimming trees and bushes away from buildings.

Removing weeds.

Keeping lawns cut short.

Removing outside accumulations of leaves and debris.

Removing outside trash, including cans and tires in which mosquitoes can breed in trapped water.

Filling or draining low lying areas to reduce puddles.

Keeping dumpsters and trash barrels closed and emptying and cleaning them regularly.

Ensuring drainage of drips from air conditioners.

Ensuring drainage of compost heaps.

Ensuring proper grade against foundation walls.

Eliminating wood to soil contact.

Cleaning gutters and outside drains.

Maintaining a dry, bare strip of concrete, gravel, etc. around the foundations.

Replacing plantings which attract pests e.g., flowering shrubs, with less attracting vegetation e.g., conifers.

Removing exterior lighting which attracts pests, especially near doors and windows, and replace where light is needed with low attractancy fittings e.g., high pressure sodium vapor lamps.

Storing firewood off the ground and away from buildings.

Inspecting and thereby avoiding bringing infested firewood, patio furniture, etc., indoors.

Avoiding bringing infested cut flowers indoors.

Fitting tight exterior doors, fitted with anti-pest tension strips or sweeps.

Keeping doors shut when not in use.

Caulking crevices around doors, windows, and vents.

Screening windows and vents. 40 mesh screen is necessary to exclude very small flies.

Ensuring adequate ventilation in attics, basements, and crawl spaces.

Upgrading food storage, waste handling and cleaning to reduce food and water to pests.

Repairing leaks and reducing condensation problems.

Sealing indoor crevices which may become harborages for invading pests.
